Summary: The District entered into an Agreement with Turnitin for a one (1) year renewal term for software licenses for the 2022-23 school year.  The English Language Arts (ELA) Subject Area Council (SAC) is comprised of ELA Department Chairs across the District.  In 2019, the ELA SAC proposed a solution to promote originality and proper citations for student work samples ranging from essays to performance tasks.  The group reviewed different programs and unanimously approved Turnitin as the tool to address this need.  Turnitin will allow teachers to focus their time and energy on providing feedback to students on the content of their writing as opposed to validating originality and monitoring plagiarism.

Turnitin is an online software program that supports Academic Integrity, Effective Feedback, and Peer Review for student writing.  It also provides feedback to students on their use of source material with the world’s largest content comparison database.  It highlights original writing and proper citation.  When institutions adopt Turnitin Feedback Studio, unoriginal work decreases by 33 percent, and students are challenged to think more critically.

The total cost for the software is $29,275.10 for the 2022-23 school year.  This Agreement shall be from September 10, 2022, through September 9, 2023.

This Agreement is being brought before the Board as ratification due to teacher interest and receiving requests for renewal after the contract expiration date.
Funding: The cost for this item is included in the 2022-23 operating budget funded through Various COVID Funds, not the General Fund.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees ratify the Agreement with Turnitin for software licenses for Heritage High School, Liberty High School, Perris High School, Perris Lake High School, and Paloma Valley High School.
