Summary: Angel Love-Behrens, Lee Joyce, Kimberly Nelson, and Kimberli Escarcega, English teachers at California Military Institute request approval to attend the 2023 National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Annual Convention in Columbus Ohio, November 16-19, 2023. The 2023 NCTE Annual Convention will bring thousands of educators, experts, authors, administrators, publishers, and others together for four days of learning, networking, and inspiration. With more than 600 concurrent sessions, attendees of the NCTE Annual Convention have access to the greatest experts in the field and the opportunity to shape a program around the issues most relevant to schools and communities. NCTE’s 2023 Convention is an in-person event. The unique qualities of this event are such that a hybrid format cannot meet the expectations of NCTE’s Annual Convention. NCTE recognizes that hybrid-format events allow particular benefits; however, both the participation rates and experiences of attending a hybrid Convention remotely in 2022 provided insight that such experiences were not equitable. Therefore, California Military Institute is respectfully requesting permission to send four English Teachers to this in-person convention to support their teachers' professional development so that they may take their teaching skills to the next level.
Funding: This cost for this item is included in the 2023-24 operating budget funded through the Charter Local Control and Accountability Plan Fund, not the Charter General Fund.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve the out-of-state conference request for four California Military Institute teachers to attend the National Council of Teachers of English Conference in Columbus, Ohio, November 16-19, 2023.
