Summary: The District's Educational Services Department has made recommendations for updates in our district-wide course catalog. Previously approved for the California Military Institute, we are now submitting these World Language courses for the rest of the Perris Union High School District: Chinese I (Mandarin), Chinese II, and Chinese III. These courses meet the UC/CSU A-G Requirement "E."

Chinese I (Mandarin) is the beginning level course in the Chinese language. It will cover basic elements of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and understanding the Chinese language. The course will introduce students to basic vocabulary and grammatical structures. The student will also gain general knowledge about the culture.

Chinese II is a continuation of Chinese I. It will reinforce and expand on the Knowledge and Skills in the first year, specifically Reading, Writing, as well as listening, speaking, and culture. The course continually well-introduced students two more vocabulary and grammatical structures and culture.

Chinese III Is a third-year course designed for non-Chinese proficient students who have had two years of Chinese language study. The course's main objectives are to build upon previously acquired solid foundations and develop communicative skills to face real-world situations. To achieve this, students engage in functional and communicative activities, such as dialogues, role-playing, and presentations, in order to develop their skills in the four areas of language acquisition: speaking, listening comprehension reading, and writing. Special attention is given to pronunciation, tones, rhythm, and Chinese character writings. Chinese culture is incorporated throughout the entire course.

These courses of study were first adopted by the California Military Institute board in 2009 and have increased in popularity. These courses are now being considered as offerings at the comprehensive school sites.

The Director of Curriculum and Instruction and the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services has approved the above courses.
