The District's Educational Services Department has recommended updates in our district-wide course catalog. When a course is discovered to be out of date, the department team is requested to work together to bring the course of study current. The American Sign Language courses currently being offered are being revised to align with the current content standards and practices. All of the American Sign Language courses meet the CSU/UC A-G graduation requirements of “E” World Languages.
American Sign Language I will blend the interactive elements of communicative language teaching, the organization of functional-notional instruction, and the target language emphasis of immersion. Signing Naturally Units 1-6 are ideally suited for ASL instruction. The teacher's guide contains over 100 instructional hours of revised and updated lessons, incorporating suggestions made by instructors and using proven research methods.
American Sign Language II focuses on Units 7–11 in the Signing Naturally series. The units comprise several kinds of lessons, including functional (conversational or narrative) skill building, comprehension, cultural, and review. The functional lessons introduce vocabulary and key grammar structures through the use of key dialogues or narratives. Skill-building lessons focus on practicing detailed language features that support students’ general ASL production, such as various number types, expanded fingerspelling practice, space and semantic use of agreement or spatial verbs, and the use of negation signs. The comprehension lessons use stories to expand students’ skills to process and figure out meanings from larger chunks of signed information. The culture lessons focus on behaviors and knowledge that enable students to act in appropriate linguistic and social ways and to gain more cultural insight on the Deaf community.
American Sign Language III and III Honors will develop intermediate to advanced level skills in signing and incomprehension of signs while deepening their familiarity with grammatical features of ASL. The course expands the expressive and receptive vocabulary necessary to increase ASL proficiency. It will increase visual perception, visual memory, signed fluency, and length of signed interactions to enable prolonged conversations with Deaf individuals. The students will gain increased knowledge of Deaf Culture, including art and literature. Students will also become familiar with well-known Deaf individuals and historical events.
American Sign Language IV Honors students will continue to develop advanced-level skills in signing and incomprehension of signs while deepening their familiarity with the grammatical features of ASL. The course expands the expressive and receptive vocabulary necessary to increase ASL proficiency. It will increase visual perception, visual memory, signed fluency, and length of signed interactions to enable prolonged conversations with a Deaf person. The student will gain increased knowledge of Deaf culture, including art and literature. Students will also become familiar with well-known Deaf individuals and historical events. The course will include the development of skills for interpreting (sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign) and will be demonstrated during live school-sponsored events.
