Summary: The District's Educational Services Department has made recommendations for updates in our district-wide course catalog. At this time, we are submitting a revised Social Science course titled Criminology. This course does meet the UC/CSU A-G requirement “G.”

The Criminology course is a semester elective course in law and justice that provides students with an opportunity for concentrated study of the legal, judicial, law enforcement, and corrections systems of the United States. Students focus on legal principles and their laws and procedures in their study. In addition, students examine relevant examples of civil and criminal rules, law-enforcement methods, court procedures, and efforts toward corrective justice. Students also investigate legal and justice systems problems and issues arising from their law and justice course operation.

This is an introduction to the sociological study of crime and criminal behavior. The course surveys various theories of crime, emphasizing understanding the social causes of criminal behavior. The techniques for measuring crime as a social phenomenon and the characteristics of criminals are examined. This course addresses crime types (consensual or white-collar crimes), the criminal justice system, and other social responses to crime.

The Director of Curriculum and Instruction and the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services has approved the above course.
