Summary: Dr. Casaundra McNair, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, requests permission for five (5) selected certificated and classified employees to travel through Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, New York, and Ontario, Canada, June 18-25, 2024. Footsteps to Freedom is a hands-on program that utilizes a pedagogy that focuses on transformational leadership and historical empathy, which is widely considered a vital leadership competency and the single greatest skill needed by leaders today. The program is designed as a transformative adult learning experience that expedites professional and personal growth. The program's foundation is the study tour and 8-day fully immersive learning experience that retraces the steps of freedom seekers from Kentucky to Canada. The Footsteps to Freedom Tour will be sponsored and paid for by the PUHSD Ethnic Studies Fund, not the General Fund.
Funding: The cost for this item will be included in the 2023-24 operating budget funded through the Ethnic Studies Fund, not the General Fund.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve the out-of-country and out-of-state travel request for five selected certificated and classified employees to attend the 2024 Footsteps to Freedom Underground Railroad Experience sponsored by the Riverside County Office of Education, traveling through Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, New York, and Ontario, Canada, June 18-25, 2024.
