The District's Educational Services Department has recommended updates in our district-wide course catalog. When a course is discovered beneficial to students and the district feels there may be a need for the course, new courses are submitted. We are submitting a new Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps Courses: Naval Science 1 and Naval Science 2.
The Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps program is a joint effort between the US Navy and local school districts across the country. NJROTC aims to instill patriotism and foster citizenship and leadership skills in America's youth. The curriculum balances naval science, military activities, physical fitness, and orientation trips. Not only does this course provide an opportunity for leadership training, but it also seeks to instill the Navy Core Values of honor, courage, and commitment and teach young people how to live those values—even those who never joined the Navy.
Naval Science 1 (NS1) will introduce students to the meaning of citizenship, the elements of leadership, and the value of scholarship in attaining life goals. It will also promote an awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle, including physical fitness, a proper diet, and controlling stress and provide drug awareness, as well as provide the principles of health and first aid, geography and survival skills, and an overview of Naval ships and aircraft.
Naval Science 2 (NS2) includes major topics and student objectives, including the American Revolution, the Civil War, the Cold War, World War I, World War II, and America's rise to world power status. Embedded throughout is the introduction of students to the precepts of citizenship, the elements of leadership, and the value of scholarship in attaining life goals.
This year-long course is intended for grades nine through twelve as an elective credit and does meet the UC/CSU A-G requirement of the "G" Elective.
The primary textbooks intended for this course is titled Naval Science 1 - Introduction to the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps by Pearson Education with the ISBN of 0-137-96917-1, published 2022, and Naval Science 2 - Maritime History, Leadership, and Nautical Sciences for the NJROTC Student by CDR Richard R. Hobbs, USNR (Ret), with the ISBN of 978-1-68247-699-4, published in 2021. The United States Navy will supplement all textbooks.
