Summary: Heritage High School Agriculture teacher, Maggie Maratsos, requests Board of Trustees approval for an overnight field trip request for six (6) Heritage High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) students and one (1) chaperone to attend the FFA Public Speaking State Finals in Fresno, California, April 20-21, 2023. This competition is only open to high school FFA students from all around California who have qualified for this high-level contest at the regional level. These high school students will travel to Fresno, at the heart of California's agricultural industry, to compete in several public speaking contests, ranging from Extemporaneous Public Speaking to Parliamentary Procedure and Debate. California State FFA staff will serve as the coordinators of this contest. College professors, industry professionals, and agriculture teachers from all over the state will serve as judges for these contests. This contest is usually held just before our State Conference event begins; however, the public speaking event is separate from the conference this year. Therefore, qualifying contests for this event were held later in the year. By going on this trip, students can compete at a high level in their specific events, which is a great privilege; this contest is the final and highest-ranking contest offered for California members. We will also make a few stops to learn about agriculture in California's San Joaquin Valley. This will help our students gain a fuller and broader perspective on just how important agriculture is to the economy of California and how they can better advocate for this industry using their public speaking skills.
Funding: The cost for this item is included in the 2022-23 operating budget funded through Heritage High School Career Technical Education Incentive Grant Funds, not the General Fund.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve the overnight field trip request for Heritage High School Future Farmers of America students to attend the FFA Public Speaking State Finals, April 20-21, 2023 in Fresno, California.
