Summary:

The District's Educational Services Department has recommended updates in our district-wide course catalog. When a course is discovered to be beneficial to students and the district feels there may be a need for the course, a new course is submitted. At this time, we are submitting a new Advanced Placement course, AP Research. AP (Advanced Placement) Research allows students to deeply explore an academic topic, problem, or issue of individual interest. Through this exploration, students design, plan, and conduct a yearlong research-based investigation to address a research question. In the AP Research course, students further the skills they acquired in the AP Seminar course by understanding research methodology, employing ethical research practices, and accessing, analyzing, and synthesizing information as they address a research question. Students explore their skill development, document their processes, and curate the artifacts of the development of their scholarly work in a portfolio. The course culminates in an academic paper of approximately 4000–5000 words (accompanied by a performance or exhibition of product where applicable) and a presentation with an oral defense. Students will work almost exclusively on their own research study, paper, and presentation while continuing to exercise the QUEST inquiry framework established during the first course in the series, AP Capstone - Seminar. This year-long course is intended for grades nine through twelve as a world language credit and will meet the UC/CSU A-G requirement of "GB" World Languages. The textbook intended for this course is titled How to Do Your Research Project, A Guide for Students by Gary Thomas, with the ISBN of 9781529786279, published in 2017.
