Summary:
|
One key piece in providing a high-quality education for students is to secure qualified substitute teachers (i.e., “Guest Teachers”) to cover when a member of the teaching force is unable to be at work. Similarly, as a high school district, it is essential to provide coverage for counselors absent for extended periods (e.g., maternity leave, medical leave, military leave, etc.) Perris Union High School has experienced increasing difficulty finding adequate coverage for employee absences in the past couple of years due to the local, state, and national shortage of substitutes. On October 20, 2021, the Board of Trustees approved a temporary salary increase for certificated substitutes for the 2021-22 school year. Reverting to the established pay rates would put the District in the lowest quartile among sixteen (16) surrounding school districts.
In an effort to attract and retain certificated substitutes, the District proposes the following pay rate increases for guest teachers and substitute counselors effective July 1, 2022:
- Guest Teacher (30-Day Permit) daily pay rate - $225 per day
- Long Term Guest Teacher (30-Day Permit) daily pay rate - $250 per day. (The long-term rate is applied to Guest Teachers who work ten (10) days or more in the same assignment.)
- Guest Teachers (Fully Credentialed or District-Trained) daily pay rate - $250 per day
- Long Term Guest Teacher (Fully Credentialed or District-Trained) daily pay rate - $275
- Substitute Counselor daily pay rate - $275
Increasing the pay rate will help our District attract and retain new substitute teachers, assist in filling absences when teachers and other certificated staff are absent from work and provide student learning continuity.
