Summary:
|
The Perris Union High School District would like to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with The Regents of the University of California on Behalf of its Los Angeles Campus to conduct a four-year (4) study funded by the National Institute of Health to understand the impact of school-wide AVID on adolescent health. Although AVID was designed to improve academic outcomes, it might also change the relationships students form with adults and peers at school, as well as health behaviors, such as substance use. However, there are no studies testing whether school-wide AVID improves adolescent health and well-being. Implementing AVID school-wide takes commitment and resources, and this study will help schools better understand how AVID may positively impact all students on campus.
The Research Team would supply all recruitment materials and coordinate distribution and collection with each school. They will also be available to answer questions about study participation at school meetings, such as registration days or back-to-school events. The research team will also conduct annual surveys for students participating in the study and request academic and school administrative data (such as course schedules, grades, attendance, and test scores) for participating students to link to students’ survey responses. The research team will also use de-identified data as part of the study so that non-participants can better understand how participating students compare to the larger school community.
At the participating schools, the Research Team will recruit a sample of 9th-12th grade students that they will follow for (four) 4 years with annual surveys to assess students’ social networks, health behaviors, and psychosocial well-being. The research team will link this data with administrative school data to assess their course participation and academic performance. Because 75% of our sample will likely complete high school during the study period, we will also be able to assess college attendance and persistence. Only students who provide written parental consent and student assent will be included in the study, and students will receive a gift card following each completed survey as a participant incentive.
The term of this Memorandum of Understanding shall be for four (4) years, from April 1, 2024, through March 31, 2028.
