Summary:

The District's Educational Services Department has made recommendations for our district-wide course catalog updates. We are submitting revised World Language courses: French I and French II. These courses meet the UC/CSU A-G Requirement "E."
French I is the first year of French language instruction that introduces the student to grammar structures, phonics, and vocabulary to develop communication skills at the novice low level. Students will be prepared to engage in conversation and correspondence, provide and obtain information, express feelings, and exchange opinions. They will understand and interpret spoken, written, and reading the language on various topics. Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the traditions, products, practices, and perspective of the cultures studies. They will use their cultural knowledge for interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communication.
French II is the second course in French language instruction. It is intended for students who passed French I with a "C" or better. Students will be further exposed to the French-speaking areas of the world, and the course content furthers the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Emphasis is placed on expanded vocabulary development, the verb conjunctions in present, perfect and imperfect tenses, with an introduction to the future, and conditional tenses with expended grammatical structures. Cross-cultural understanding is promoted, and real-life applications are practiced and assessed throughout the course.
French III is a college preparatory course for students who have successfully completed French I and II. French III reviews all material learned previously. New grammar includes expansion in the present, past, and future indicative and present of subjunctive and imperative tenses. Vocabulary focuses on idioms and words used in everyday situations. All four linguistic modalities (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) are stressed to increase fluency and self-confidence in the target language.
AP French Language and Culture are equivalent to an intermediate-level college course in French. Students cultivate their understanding of the French language and culture by applying interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational modes of communication in real-life situations as they explore concepts related to family and community, personal and public identity, beauty and aesthetics, science and technology, contemporary life, and global challenges.
These courses of study were updated to align with the current adopted French textbooks. If all the other grading conditions have been met, completion of four years or passing the Advanced Placement exam in a world language may qualify the student for the California Seal of Biliteracy.
The Director of Curriculum and Instruction and the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services has approved the above courses.
