Summary: Jennifer Rizzo, Liberty High School teacher, requests the Board of Trustees approval to attend the 2022 Western History Association Conference in San Antonio, Texas, October 14-17, 2022.

The Western History Association's purpose states that sexual harassment and assault are serious issues facing society and the academy. Additionally, sexual violence has been a pervasive theme throughout the history of the North American West, frontiers, homelands, and borderlands. As an association of historians responsible for studying and teaching this diverse history, we are committed to ensuring that our scholarly work advances and contributes to national conversations surrounding these issues.

The Committee on Assault Response and Educational Strategies (CARES) are a Standing Committee in the Western History Association (WHA). It comprises WHA members, including graduate students and professional members, dedicated to ending sexual harassment and assault in our organization and our academic communities and advocating for continued scholarly inquiry into the history of sexual violence in the North American West.

The 2022 Program Committee and Local Arrangements Committee created this conference to highlight the history of struggles for reproductive, voting, and immigrant rights in Texas and the West, as well as address more recent attempts to restrict LGBTQ+ rights and the teaching of race and inequality in U.S. history.

This item is being brought before the Board as ratification due to the conference request being submitted in an untimely manner.
Funding: This item is included in the 2022-23 operating budget funded through Liberty High School Site Funds, not the General Fund.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees ratify the Out-of-State Conference Request for Jennifer Rizzo, Liberty High School teacher, to attend the 2022 Western History Association Conference in San Antonio, Texas, October 14-17, 2022.
