Summary: The District's Educational Services Department continues to evaluate and recommend revisions and updates to student curriculum as it is needed. The Educational Services department would like to present supplemental material to be added to a current Mathematics course: Advanced Algebra with Financial Applications.

The Advanced Algebra with Financial Applications was written as a pilot for the California Military Institute in 2015 and piloted in 2016. Due to the success of the course, it was recommended to continue to offer it to our students. The course was board-approved on February 15, 2017, to be used district-wide with the textbook from the course published in 2013. Since the board's approval, there has been a new edition of the textbook that has been released for this course. National Geographic/Cengage: Financial Algebra: Advanced Algebra with Financial Applications 2nd edition 2019 - ISBN number: 9780357423509; Cost = $90.50 per student.

Financial Algebra: Advanced Algebra with Financial Applications is a substantive modeling course for all students that teaches and uses advanced algebra in the content areas of discretionary spending, banking, credit, auto, and homeownership, employment, taxes, investments, entrepreneurship, retirement, & budgeting. The program draws upon selected topics from Advanced Algebra, Geometry, Precalculus, Statistics, and Probability. Students need only an Algebra 1 prerequisite. The newest edition includes the most recent IRS tax code updates and how they affect our daily lives. Over the decades, the program has proven to be a motivating, engaging, and rewarding experience for all students.

The above supplemental material(s) have been approved by the Director of Curriculum and Instruction and the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services.
Funding: This item is included in the 2021-22 operating budget funded through the California Lottery Fund, not the General Fund.
Recommendation: It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve the supplemental materials for the current Mathematics course: Advanced Algebra with Financial Applications.
