Capitol Leadership Experience - SAVE THE DATE May 7-9 2023 v5.pdf
Summary: Alisha Carlin, CTE Business Pathway teacher, and DECA advisor, requests approval from the Board of Trustees for five (5) Liberty High School CTSO students and one (1) CTSO advisor to attend the 2023 California DECA Capitol Leadership Experience at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Sacramento, California, May 5-7, 2023. Founded in 1946, DECA is a student organization with over 200,000 high school members, 4,500 advisors, and 15,000 postsecondary collegiate division members worldwide. The student members of DECA are smart, dedicated individuals already actively involved in preparing for successful careers in entrepreneurship, marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. California DECA is a member association of DECA Inc. with almost 5,000 members. DECA members are experienced in workplace skills and proven leaders within their peer groups and neighborhood communities. The majority—generally juniors and seniors in high school—hold jobs, and a surprising percentage of members own their businesses. Eighty-six percent of DECA members will pursue postsecondary education. DECA is not extracurricular. Instead, DECA is co-curricular and designed to be an integral part of the classroom instructional program. DECA provides teachers and members with educational and leadership development activities to merge with the classroom instructional program, teaching the skills that a successful career in business requires. Working hand-in-hand with the academic and business communities, DECA’s goal is for its members to develop a “career success kit” to carry into their professional and personal lives after graduation, including occupational skills needed for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and entrepreneurship leadership skills, an understanding and appreciation of civic responsibility, ethical behavior in personal and business relationships, and an understanding of the role of our free enterprise system in the global economy. Liberty High School was invited to apply for an opportunity to attend this leadership event presented by the California Department of Education. This experience is designed for California CTSO chapters and is exclusive to 12. Registration is complimentary, and there is a travel stipend package of $3,900 for 5 chapter members and 1 chapter advisor to cover transportation and lodging at the Embassy Suites Sacramento. Chapters will be notified if their application is selected the week of April 10.
Funding: No fiscal impact.
