Summary:
The District's Educational Services Department has recommended updates in our district-wide course catalog. When a course is discovered beneficial to students and the district feels there may be a need for the course, new courses are submitted. At this time, we are submitting a new Social Science Elective, Academic Decathlon.

The Academic Decathlon course will provide students with a rigorous and diverse learning experience that spans ten academic disciplines. Students will be asked to deeply research and study topics in seven academic areas: language, music, art, economics, science, social studies, and math. They will also study and participate in three performance activities: speech, essay writing, and interviewing. Students will develop research skills, critical thinking skills, and inference abilities to prepare them for the Academic Decathlon competition and college. Students who take this class will be better prepared for success in college and careers. Oral and written communication will also be covered in the course as students take part in speech, essay, and interview activities.

Students will develop research skills, critical thinking skills, and inference abilities to prepare them for the Academic Decathlon competition as well as prepare them with college organizational skills. They will also study and master topics not traditionally taught in core classes. Students will develop strong skills in the following areas: listening, speaking, analysis, evaluation, critical reading, and critical thinking.

This course is intended for grades ten through twelve. The textbook for this course will vary by year and can be located at www.usad.org. It may contain novels that the United States Academic Decathlon indicates for long works of literature.
