Summary:
The District's Educational Services Department has recommended updates in our district-wide course catalog. When a course is discovered to be out of date or curriculum programs have made changes, the department team is requested to work together to bring the course of study current. The English teachers revised these courses to align with the English Language Development standards to best support our English Learners. These courses do not meet the UC/CSU requirements. English Intensive MS and English Intensive for high school students are comprehensive reading intervention courses specifically Designed to accelerate reading and academic achievement for students and provide them with an introduction to a rigorous English language arts curriculum. Designed as an intensive intervention, these courses meet the requirements and common core standards for English along with the essential program components or EPC for Intensive English language arts instruction. The course is structured to provide instruction based on the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's Read 180 Program and core literature to provide reading comprehensive strategies approaches to essay writing and vocabulary development skills to students as well as literary analysis skills and strategies. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's Read 180 Intervention Program is one of California's state board-adopted instructional materials programs. Notably, the English intensive intervention course allows at-risk students to build strong literacy skills while remaining on track for further academic success. Academic Language Development is designed for middle school English Learners in the mid-advanced stages of English Language Development. Students will be placed in this course with scores on the district English Learner Placement Matrix of a 740 -980 Lexile Score with some functional receptive and productive English skills as measured by the California State Approved English Language Development assessment. This will allow students to develop English skills and move students from emerging levels to expanding levels on the English Language Development Continuum. This course will also provide students with access to the core curriculum. The goal is to practice and apply the areas of building concepts and language, analyzing and discussing text, academic writing, and presenting ideas. The students will use several instructional routines to meet the goal of mastering the English Language Development Standards.
