Summary:
The District's Educational Services Department has recommended updates in our district-wide course catalog. When a course is discovered to be out of date or curriculum programs have made changes, the department team is requested to work together to bring the course of study current. The Advanced Placement English teachers revised these courses to align with the current AP English College Board standards to best support our students. These courses both meet the UC/CSU requirement of "B." The AP English Literature and Composition course focuses on reading, analyzing, and writing about imaginative literature (fiction, poetry, drama) from various periods. Students engage in close reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature to deepen their understanding of how writers use language to provide meaning and pleasure. As they read, students consider a work's structure, style, themes, and use of figurative language, imagery, and symbolism. Writing assignments include expository, analytical, and argumentative essays that require students to analyze and interpret literary works. College Course Equivalent The AP English Literature and Composition course aligns with an introductory college-level literature and writing curriculum. The AP English Language course allows students to read rigorous texts from various eras and in different genres, analyzing the big ideas of rhetorical situations, claims/evidence, reasoning/organization, and style. Students use given texts to reach the goal of effective writing and analysis: they will read and annotate texts from a critical perspective to craft well-reasoned essays and personal reflections in response. The ultimate purpose of AP English Language and Composition is to build rhetorical skills and foster students who will actively and intelligently engage with the world around them. The AP English Language and Composition course helps students move beyond reading for mere comprehension, and it moves them past composing programmatic responses; it encourages them to think critically and purposefully about the rhetorical choices that authors make, and it leads them to consider the choices they make when deciding to add their voice into any given discourse: civil or academic. Students will have the opportunity to take the AP exams to receive AP credit on their transcript. A qualifying score of three (3) or better on the AP exams may earn a student college credit.

It is recommended that the Board of Trustees receive, for its review and consideration, as part of the first reading, the revised advanced placement English courses: AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature and Composition.
